Osasuna have confirmed the signing of Real Betis defender Nelson on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent transfer.
The 27-year-old player spent two years with Real Betis team following his transfer from Benfica, but following the clubs’ relegation in 2009 they are looking to reduce their wage bill, and have agreed to allow Nelson, who has been capped on one occasion by Portugal, to move to Pamplona.

Atletico de Madrid, with David De Gea, Europa League Champion

Atletico de Madrid lifted a European trophy for the first time in 24 years as a Diego Forlan double sank Fulham after extra-time in the Europa League Final at the HSH Nordbank Arena in Hamburg.

An opportunist's finish from Forlan gave Atleti the lead over their opponents, but Simon Davies' equaliser just before the break saw the scoreline level after ninety minutes. Forlan himself then popped up in the second period of stoppage time for the winner.

The Spanish narrowly side had the best of what was a largely even opening period, but both goalkeepers had their saves to make, much to the delight of the large contingent of neutral fans.

Despite their giant-killing credentials, Fulham struggled to assert themselves early on in the face of Atletico pressure.

The Spaniards, who achieved mainly draws on their path to the final, played swift, attacking football, culminating both in a series of corners and also a strike that hit the post from the effervescent Diego Forlan within the opening ten minutes.

Dickson Etuhu's rash challenge on Tomas Ujfalusi outside the area belied the pressure on the Cottagers, but Mark Schwarzer was on hand to prevent a Jose Antonio Reyes goal with a fine save on the quarter-hour mark.

Fulham enjoyed their first true chance five minutes later as Davies fired hard and high from the edge of the area, but young Atleti 'keeper David de Gea showed strong hands to hold it.

Sergio Aguero and Forlan looked to be the most dangerous men on the pitch, and thus it proved just after the half-hour when the latter took the lead. Indeed, it was borne of the former's scuffed shot from 16 yards, but Forlan was on hand to nip between the dozing defence and side-foot it home first time - a true striker's finish.

But anyone who's watched the Europa League this season knows not to write Fulham off too early. Just five minutes later they were on level terms, Simon Davies concluding a brief moment of Fulham pressure against a disorganised Atleti backline with a tight-angled, close-ranged finish. The highly-rated Bobby Zamora was the architect, as so often he has been this season.

Atleti closed the half with a penalty appeal against Paul Konchesky, who appeared to handle a Reyes shot, but referee Nicola Rizzoli saw nothing, and the scoreline was level heading into the second half. Fulham came out with significantly more optimism after the break, Zamora and Zoltan Gera confidently setting about their opponents with a series of through balls and speculative efforts.

However, none were coming off, and as Zamora trudged off due to injury ten minutes after the break the Cottagers fans could be forgiven for thinking that Fulham would retreat. Instead the irrepressible Davies still looked dangerous with long-range shots, but again there was insufficient accuracy about the Londoners' play.

Atleti had to make a change of their own twenty minutes from time as they continued to weather pressure, Simao coming off for Jose Jurado, but the introduction of the winger, as well as Toto Salvio, did little to add more fluency to Atleti's play. Indeed, by this time nerves were frayed as the final whistle approached, the match ending with a half-hearted penalty claim from Aguero after a Brede Hangeland challenge. Extra time thus began, and this time the English once more came out of the blocks stronger. Erik Nevland should have netted when put through by a dinked ball from Chris Baid, but instead the Norwegian fired extremely wide.

But with five minutes remaining in the first half of the extra period, Mark Schwarzer was the hero as Diego Forlan's cut-back saw the goalkeeper stretch to parry clear for an Etuhu punt. The goalkeeper, though, was then almost caught out. Forlan was again the architect as he freed Salvio in the box, but the substitute could only manage a ball across goal. With Schwarzer on the ground the ball rolled to Aguero, but the Argentine tapped it inches wide from mere feet out.

Atleti were clearly buoyed by that near miss, and in the second period of extra time the match was open with chances at both ends. But the decisive one fell to Diego Forlan. Aguero brilliantly kept the ball in play on the left flank, strode into the box and played it past Aaron Hughes for - inevitably - Diego Forlan to fire a deflected finish home.

Fulham threw everything forward after that but with just four minutes left it was Atleti's trophy - their first in fourteen years and their first on the continental stage in almost a quarter of a century.

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has named his provisional 30-man squad for this summer's World Cup in South Africa. Among the notable inclusions are Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes and young Atletico shot-stopper David De Gea. With Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas as Del Bosque’s number one and Liverpool's Pepe Reina thought to be second choice, Valdes and De Gea will be competing with Villarreal’s Diego Lopez for a seat on the plane to Africa.

Spain’s final list of 23 will be made known on May 19. La Roja are drawn in Group H alongside Chile, Honduras and Switzerland.

Diego Forlán fired Club Atlético de Madrid into the UEFA Europa League final after his extra-time strike earned the Spanish side an away-goals triumph over Liverpool FC.

It was Forlán's solitary goal that earned Atlético their first-leg win and the Uruguay striker was the hero again at Anfield, sweeping in a José Antonio Reyes cross in the 102nd minute to deny a Liverpool side who had fought their way into a winning position through goals from Alberto Aquilani and Yossi Benayoun. Atlético can now look forward to their first European final for 24 years against another Premier League side, Fulham FC, in Hamburg on 12 May.
Quique Sánchez Flores's team had scored twice in every previous away tie in the competition but were slow to show as an attacking force here. Indeed, they almost made the worst possible start inside 60 seconds. Dirk Kuyt's flick-on sent Benayoun through down the right but David de Gea saved. There were further scares midway through the first half – Kuyt fired over a cross from makeshift right-back Javier Mascherano, then Daniel Agger headed in a Steven Gerrard free-kick only to be ruled offside.
Atlético looked to have held out until half-time only for Aquilani to strike. Reyes failed to track Benayoun as he latched on to Mascherano's throw and though Kuyt missed the ensuing cross, Aquilani found the bottom corner with a first-time strike. Rafael Benítez is renowned for his mastery of the one-off occasion and his choice of the Italian playmaker as the front prong in Liverpool's midfield five had paid off.
At the other end Atlético's first-half effort had yielded little. Raúl García's bouncing shot tested Pepe Reina, then Sérgio Agüero, back from suspension, broke through but, forced wide by Reina, sent over an aimless cross. The visitors looked to play higher up the pitch as the second half unravelled yet still Liverpool looked arguably more dangerous, Glen Johnson drawing a fingertip save from De Gea.
After Forlán miscontrolled when clean through, it looked like Atlético's chance had gone begging when, four minutes into extra time, Liverpool scored their second, Lucas dinking a ball over the top and Benayoun sending a shot under De Gea. However, Atlético responded. José Manuel Jurado fired centimetres wide before Forlán, once a match-winner here for Manchester United FC, struck. Reyes crossed from the right and the unmarked Uruguayan found the roof of the net. Simão could have added a second but for Liverpool the damage was already done.

Tenerife striker Nino scored a hat-trick to help the promoted side defeat European hopefuls Getafe 3-2 on Sunday and move one point from safety with five games left. Getafe went ahead through Pedro Leon on 10 minutes but Nino, a U1st Sports player, top-scorer in the second division last season, replied on 30 minutes with his first goal and then scored twice inside seven minutes (69 min, 76) to complete his treble.

Tenerife lie third from bottom but are now just a point behind 17th placed Malaga while Getafe fall two points off the top six.

Andres Guardado: We Can Turn Our Season Around Against Barcelona

Deportivo La Coruna winger Andres Guardado has admitted his side have endured a poor second half of the season, but insisted they are ready to turn things around tomorrow night at Camp Nou against Barcelona.

“We are a long way from being the team we were in the first half of the season, but we’re coming to Barcelona to turn that around,” the Mexican international told Barca TV.

“We aren’t doing well and it’s got to all of us but on Wednesday we will be looking to break the bad run of results we’ve had, put in a performance to make things tough for Barca and maybe take a point home. It’ll be difficult, but not impossible.”

Finally, Guardado revealed it was no coincidence that the Herculinos’ dip in form coincided with the loss of Brazilian star Felipe to long term injury.

“He has been and still is an important absentee for us. He gave us an outlet on the left and losing him is the main reason why we have lost the solidity we had in the first half of the campaign.”

Hungry Perotti plots Sevilla's ascent

In little over a year Diego Perotti has gone from a reserve-team player learning his trade to a full Argentina international plotting Sevilla FC's path to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
Last February, Perotti was a virtual ever-present as Sevilla's B team battled relegation from Spain's Segunda División, but 13 months on he is a regular with Manuel Jiménez's senior side. He made his international debut against Spain in November and now the 21-year-old is looking to build on a 1-1 first-leg draw against PFC CSKA Moskva. "I feel good," he said. "Perhaps I lost my edge after playing so many matches but after the [winter] break I have picked up again. I really want to get back to my best; the sort of form I was in at the beginning of the season."
That form saw the versatile Perotti edge ahead of Diego Capel, a fellow B-team graduate, in the pecking order for Sevilla's left-wing berth. It has been a productive rivalry, the pair pushing each other to new heights. Capel forced his way into the starting XI for the first leg in Moscow before Perotti reclaimed his place, further staking his claim by teeing up Federico Fazio's goal in Saturday's 1-1 draw at home against RC Deportivo La Coruña.
The youngsters are both ultimately after the same thing, however. "I will give 100% to get to the quarter-finals," said Perotti. "All games are different; you prepare for them in different ways and the CSKA match will be a step up considering the importance of the result and the prestige that goes with it."
For Perotti, home advantage will be "crucial" and every Sevilla player "knows the importance of the match", though a run of four games without a win starting with the first leg means he is not getting ahead of himself. "We have a slender advantage but we shouldn't be over-confident. We will play as if the score was still 0-0. [CSKA] are a hard team, and are equally aware of the reward if they beat us. But first, they have to score".

New udinese signing Geijo: "Can't wait to start Serie A adventure"

New Udinese signing Alexandre Geijo spoke for the first time as a member of the Zebrette today, admitting he jumped at the chance to join the Italian outfit.

“As soon as the call came from Udinese, I accepted immediately,” he told in the press conference. “For me it is a unique opportunity."

The 27-year-old arrives from Racing Santander in Spain’s La Liga and revealed his excitement at the opportunity to play in Serie A.

"For me this is a challenge. I'm not frightened by the Italian league, football is the same everywhere and you have to earn a place in the team.” Geijo, who worked under current Udinese coach Gianni De Biasi at Levante went on to admit that he was well aware of the club’s current predicament. “Udinese are experiencing a few complications this season which they are not used to because in recent years they have always been among the top Italian football clubs.”

Finally, the striker said he couldn’t wait to make his debut for the club, adding that he was ready to fight for a first-team place. “I was ready to play from the moment I signed,” he said. “When you arrive in January, it is normal to find a team that is already established. Now it's up to me to prove my worth and repay the faith that I have been given.”

Sevilla coach Manolo Jimenez dedicated his sides Copa del Rey win over Barcelon to defender Sergio Sanchez, who has been forced to quit football due to a heart condition.

Los Nervionenses defeated Barca 2-1 at Camp Nou thanks to two second half goals from Diego Capel and Alvaro Negredo either side of a Zlatan Ibrahimovic strike to leave themselves in pole position to progress to the quarter finals of the Copa going into the second leg at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan next week.

"This victory is dedicated to Sergio Sanchez. I hope, I hope he can return. The loss of Sergio is really important. But when he returns it must be fully guaranteed and with the approval of one or many physicians," he told a press conference after the game.

Despite the lead, Jimenez has urged caution ahead of the second leg as his side still has work to do, especially considering the list of injuries.

"We won the first round with the best team in the world. It is a good result but all is not won. We have had many problems with injuries. We've paid dearly for this victory, [Jesus] Navas is injured and Lolo has cramp," he continued. "We have suffered a lot in one month. We expected a complicated January but now expect to have a happy February."

Geijo scored against Alcorcón in the King's Cup

Racing Santander shot out of the traps and had the look of a very determined side. Gonzalo Colsa was playing crisp passes out to the wings where Xisco and Oscar Serrano were making some positive attacking runs. However, there was a lack of creativity in the final third as lone striker, Alex Geijo, scraped a half chance wide in the first 20 minutes.

Alcorcon raised their level of performance and were not be out done. Francisco Borja turned well on the edge of his own area before Gomez Ernesto shot close from range. However, their efforts were fruitless as Fernandez Christian steered the ball into the back of the net in the 32nd minute. It was a goal the away side deserved as they saw out the first 45 minutes easily.

Geijo struck just minutes after the second half kicked off, linking up well with the midfield and putting the ball into the corner of the goal. The home team rallied with an equally quality goal. Inigo Lopez pounced in the area on the hour mark, with all the authority of a centre forward.

However, the revival was brief as Jose Moraton re-established the two goal advantage for Santander while Alcorcon heads were still high in the sky. Alcorcon then responded again in the closing stages as Santander shut up shop. Borja Gomes buried his 87th minute effort but the heroics were just too late on in the day.

Paraguayan striker and Real Madrid youth player Javier Acuna underwent a successful operation to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, as reported by the club's official website. The Castilla player will miss the rest of the season while he recovers from the operation and must undergo six months of rehabilitation before being ready to return to the pitch.

Acuna was one of the youth team's most promising players this season and his nose for goal caught the attention of first team coach Manuel Pellegrini, who often called the youngster from the youth ranks to train with the first team. Pellegrini even called the Paraguayan up in the squad list for match at Sporting de Gijon, although he did not see time on the pitch.

Deportivo's ambition brought them a surprise Copa del Rey win at the Mestalla against a Valencia side who were unconvincing at the back and too timid when faced with goal.

Both sides fielded broadly strong line-ups, the likes of Mata and David Villa starting for Valencia, with Andres Guardado and Filipe among the stars for Depor. Yet at the same time rotation was evident: Miguel Angel Moya and Manu Muniz were the respective 'keepers, while Hedwiges Maduro and Adrian Piscu also earned rare starts.

With so many players looking to impress it is perhaps unsurprising that the opening stages were exciting. Depor started the better side, their first great chance coming via a goalmouth scramble on the quarter-hour mark after great work from Guardado.

Valencia, though, had a period of ascendancy after the visitors were rocked by an injury to Riki, who was replaced by Adrian. Joaquin had a superb chance but blasted over after some patient buildup.

Around the 35th minute there came two great chances for Deportivo, the first resulting in a Bruno clearance and the second seeing Adrian thwarted at a one-on-one by Moya.

Mata, at the other end, shot high over the bar, unmarked from inside the area, in one of his more disappointing attempts.

Two minutes after the break he was punished as the Galicians took the lead with an angled tap after Hedwiges Maduro failed to deal with a Juan Rodriguez cross. Eight minutes later it was 2-0, this time Pablo Alvarez netting off a superb Antonio Tomas through ball that left Angel Dealbert flailing.

Valencia pulled one back as substitute David Silva deflected an Ever Banega drive into the net 12 minutes from time, yet their play remained unconvincing. In fact, although Depor were compelled to sit back, there was little for them to worry about in front of goal, although Bruno's late header over the bar after Miguel's cross was a rare moment of alarm.

The visitors, then, can take a useful away-goal lead with them back to Riazor, where Valencia need to score twice to be in with a chance of progression.

Manolo Jiménez: We hope to be in the top four and close to the top two

Sevilla coach Manolo Jiménez has declared that the battle to challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid teams for the Primera Liga championship must now be forgotten as recent results and a string of injuries have hampered his side's attempt to maintain a title tilt.

The Andalusian side are now ten points adrift of leaders Barcelona and face the champions on Tuesday night at Camp Nou in the first leg of their Copa del Rey round of 16 clash. Sevilla have just 14 first team players available for selection and Jimenez insists that his team face a difficult task.

"It will be a difficult game against the best team in the world," Jimenez told a press conference.

"We expected to lose four players to the African Cup of Nations but thankfully only two have gone [Frederic Kanoute and Didier Zokora]. But what we never envisaged was losing so many players to injury, especially ankle injuries.

"We hope to be in the top four and close to the top two. There is no doubt that will happen [Barcelona and Real Madrid finishing in the top two]. The fight for first place must be forgotten because of recent results and the problems with injuries."

Sevilla coach, Manolo Jimenez, declared himself pleased with his side's "complete" victory over Espanyol this evening.

The Andalucian team scored twice through Freddy Kanoute, and Jimenez told Marca that with the amount of chances they had, it would have been regretful had they not won.

"I believe it has been a very complete performance from the team against an opponent who played a lot and has pressed us hard," he mused.

"It was one-sided and we dominated at times. We had many chances, hit the post twice and [Carlos] Kameni made great saves. If we had not scored, we would be regretting it now."

Certainly had Sevilla not won it would have been thanks to Kameni, who was on top form in the Espanyol goal all night.

The sending off of Lola seemed to turn the game in the favour of the away side though, and Jimenez praised both him and his own side.

"At many times in the game we seemed like the home side. We dominated the middle of the pitch," he opined.

"He [Lola] was doing some great defensive work. At the break the coach put [Ivan] de la Pena to get more possession, but they lost the link between the defence and the midfield, and they paid for it."

Toulon Player Of The Day: Diego Perotti

Burgeoning young winger Diego Perotti started his professional football career at the age of 18, playing for Club Deportivo Moron in his home nation of Argentina. By this stage, ‘El Monito’ – the monkey - had already been earmarked for an impressive career and was included in a preliminary squad for the 2007 Under-20 World Cup in Canada, only to be denied a role in the team by players deemed more experienced.

Back at home, the teenager swiftly established himself as a member of the first team squad and promptly caught the eye of Sevilla. Suitably impressed to bid €200,000 for his services, success was certainly not instant in Spain for Perotti, who would have to endure two years of service with the club’s ‘B’ team before finally getting his chance in the first XI this term – an opportunity he has grasped with both hands.

Tormentor Of The Dutch

The Netherlands were left frustrated as Argentina ultimately ran riot in Toulon, cruising to a 4-0 victory against a side that was expected to push them close. In a game still finely poised at 1-0 at the interval, Perotti scored the vital second goal for his side, albeit something of a fluke, giving them the spur that they required to saunter to success.

But it was not just his goal that caught the eye. There was more than a hint of Lionel Messi’s wonderful dribbling technique on display in Perotti’s game as he threatened to cut the Dutch defence to ribbons in the second period as the game opened up. One jinking run saw him cut in from the left flank, gracefully evade a series of tackles before prodding the ball narrowly wide. Another strong burst might have ended in a goal had PSV defender Erik Pieters not halted him in his tracks in a rather agricultural fashion.

Progressing With Sevilla

On the club scene, Perotti is busy making a name for himself at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, which is coming to love his exciting style of wing play. Essentially, Perotti has only made a handful of appearances for his club side since first breaking into the first team ranks in February, but he has wowed the Sevilla fans with his skill and remarkable level of consistency on the left flank.

He may only have one goal to his name in club football, but what an important strike it was, scoring the goal that sealed Champions League qualification for Sevilla next season. In the very last minute of the penultimate fixture of the season, Perotti started and finished the move to break a game that appeared destined to finish scoreless. The following week, he induced an own goal from Juan Carlos Moreno, again deep into the fixture.

Having only started to establish himself at Sevilla, there has been previous little interest shown in the player. It is clear that Perotti is already a favourite of the Rojiblancos’ faithful, who would be loathed to see him leave. With such potential, he will simply try to make an impression next season as Sevilla compete both at home and abroad.

He will report to Academy director Frank McParland and will bring huge experience to the role, having worked at FC Barcelona for both their youth system and Barca B team.
During his time with the Catalan giants, he helped develop players of the calibre of Andres Iniesta, Victor Valdes, Gerard Pique, Bojan Krkic, Cesc Fabregas and Mikel Arteta.

He later enjoyed great success in Greece. Firstly with AEK Athens and then as assistant coach at Olympiacos before succeeding Takis Lemonis as manager and leading them to a Greek league and cup double in 2008.
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez commented: "There's a lot to do at the Academy, but we've worked hard to bring in the best people and Jose is a great appointment. He's worked with some of the top young talent in Spain and knows the challenges faced in bringing through players to the first team set-up. He's also got experience at the top after his success with Olympiacos and I'm delighted that he's agreed to join us."

Manolo Jiménez: "Sevilla played a dreadful game against Racing"

Manolo Jiménez may have spoken too soon when he said Sevilla would have been definite title frontrunners this season if there were no Barcelona. His Sevilla side stumbled to a shock 2-0 home defeat to Racing Santander overnight, and the coach was visibly irked with his charges after the contest.
“It is necessary to congratulate Racing for their excellent performance, but today, my team were dreadful,” he said during the post-match interviews. “It was one of our worst games and we were bad right from the start. We did not have the ability to change the rhythm of the game. We have lost another great chance to beat an opponent at home and we did not play like we were supposed to. We only have ourselves to blame because we were not able to overcome a compact, disciplined and direct Racing side.”
Sevilla will have another big test in midweek when they take on Valencia in the Copa del Rey, and Jiménez is hoping that the fans will still come out and support them at the Sánchez Pizjuán.
“It is logical that the fans are displeased with our poor performance today. The team lacked freshness but I hope that the fans will show their support for us against Valencia,” he concluded. The Andalucians stay third in the Primera División standings but they are now three points behind second-placed Real Madrid, and 15 points adrift of Barcelona at the top.

Sevilla: "I don't feel special at Sevilla"

If Manolo Jiménez does get fired from Sevilla anytime in the near future, the Spaniard will no doubt be cursing his luck, bearing in mind the Andalucian side are currently competing to back into the Champions League.

However, it seems as though his reign his on the brink following the draw to Osasuna, and the exit from the UEFA Cup last year. Speaking today, he admitted that he doesn't feel special at the club, but that he knows results are what matters. "I feel taken in by the club, but I do not feel special," he mused. "Coaches are slaves of the results, I am a very good professional and I get up each day to try and learn more. I want to coach a team like Sevilla, because I believe we have enough quality to compete."

Certainly Sevilla have been competing this season, at least in La Liga and the Copa Del Rey, but their exit from the UEFA Cup could be what ultimately costs Jimenez his job.

The coach acknowledged that losing in that competition was a bitter pill to swallow too. "The UEFA Cup was a very hard blow. We wanted to get very far in Europe and to compete for the trophy at the end," he said.

That upset in Europe, and more recently the draw with Osasuna, has created unhappiness amongst the fans, which was shown as they whistled the team on the pitch. Jiménez said that when this happens he suffers a lot, and it is very difficult for him to communicate with the players.

However, the coach did also defend himself somewhat by hinting that perhaps the ambitions of some of the fans are too high.

"Sevilla cannot think that they are going to win the league losing six matches, or win the Copa Del Rey playing excellent football," he opined. "We have gone several seasons with the best through hard work and effort. This season Barcelona has excelled and if nothing strange happens, they have a great chance to win the league."

"I have been to Doha on several occasions, but I can't honestly say that I know much about Qatari football," he was quoted as saying by PA Sport, "For example, I do not know any of my new club's players."
The U1st Sports coach was a member of the West German team that was defeated by Italy in the 1982 World Cup final and was capped 42 times by his country.
Before moving to West Asia, Stielike was in charge of Swiss side Sion but was shown the door only after 13 matches into the season.
Ghana stage come-back to beat Nigeria

Ghana had to come from two goals to beat Nigeria 3-2 in the first leg final qualifying for the African Nations Championships at the Ohene Djan Stadium on Sunday.

Francis Coffie scored two goals put the Black Stars at par with the Nigerians after Musa Kabiru had given the away side a comfortable two-zero lead by the 44th minute of the first half before Samuel Inkoom won the day for Ghana when he grabbed the winner in the 75th minute.

Milovan Rajevac’s side may still have a mammoth task ahead of them, with the Nigerians having scored two important goals, as the away goal rule would play a part in the second leg match in a fortnight which would be the decider for the sole ticket to the the finals in the Ivory Coast next February.

The Ghanaian bench had stated before today’s match that the Black Stars needed at least a two-goal lead from the first leg but the Nigerians worked hard for their goals as Ghana looked unconvincing in the opening half.

The first real chance fell to Ghana but the final pass to Yaw Antwi was cut out as the Nigerians quickly established control of the game. Ghana failed to match the physical presence by their opponents.

Nigeria were enjoying a good spell and broke quickly on the left, Ghana failed to halt their run and the ball was cut across the face goal beating goalkeeper Fatau Dauda. The ball rolled into the path of Musa Kabiru who poked home from six yards out in the 21st minute.

The Ghana bench made a first change when Jordan Opoku was pulled out for Edmund Owusu-Peprah.

As the minutes ticked to the end of the first half, Musa Kabiru, unmarked, rose to head in a cross floated to the far post, beating Fatau Dauda in the 43rd minute.

Two minutes of added time and Francis Coffie started Ghana’s revival when he rifled in a shot into the roof of the net to end the half 2-1. Having managed to pull a goal back, Ghana started the second period as the much better of the two sides.

And 15 minutes into the half, Ghana drew level when Francis Coffie raced down the left onto a pass from Eric Bekoe, surged into the box and struck a shot which deflected off his marker into the near post, beating the Nigerian goalkeeper, who had come off his line to attempt a save. At 2-2 and the Ghana bench made a second substitution, bringing on Kojo Poku for Eric Bekoe.

The new man set up the match winner in the 75th minute, after exchanging passes with right-full-back Samuel Inkoom, he laid the ball into the box for Inkoom, who dummied a marker before hitting the ball past the goalkeeper to make it 3-2 for Ghana. With Nigeria still stunned, Ghana introduced Alex Asamoah for Yaw Antwi and the striker nearly scored the fourth but the Nigerian goalkeeper managed to pluck the ball from his feet.

The expected Ghana fightback had paid off but the Black Stars would need to play a much better game in the return game to really see their hopes of playing in the first-ever CHAN tournament materialize.

Ivory Coast will host the maiden competition from the 22nd February-8th March 2009. The Africa Nations Championships is a new tournament designed by Caf for only home-based players of its member countries.

Besides Ajax, Sevilla, Arsenal and Internazionale will play on the tenth LG Amsterdam Tournament, on 8 and 9 August in the Amsterdam ArenA.
Arsenal, winners of the previous edition, are welcome guests in Amsterdam. The London team reached the quarter final of the Champions League in the past season and were long-time leaders in the Premier League. Arsenal were praised for their attractive play. Coach Arsène Wenger sees the LG Amsterdam Tournament as the ideal preparation for the upcomng season.

Inter has many star players, such as former Ajax players Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Maxwell and Cristian Chivu. The Italian side recently signed coach José Mourinho for three seasons.

For Spanish side Sevilla FC, with Armenteros in the team, this will be their first AT. The winners of the UEFA Cup in 2006 and 2007 played in the Champions League last season and reached the quarter finals. Former Ajax players Tom de Mul and Julien Escudé are part of the squad and will be returning to Amsterdam for the tournament.

Traditionally, the LG Amsterdam Tournament has an alternative points system, which allows extra points for goals scored. The team that loses the first match can still win the tournament. This system rewards attacking and spectacular football.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Testimonial Committee are delighted to announce they have agreed in principle with Manchester United that a testimonial match for the Norwegian against Spanish side Espanyol will be played at Old Trafford on Saturday 2 August 2008.

The former United striker was forced to retire from the game at the end of the August after a long battle with injuries.

Solskjaer has since joined the Reds' coaching staff and is looking forward to sharing his big day with the Old Trafford faithful.

“I am delighted to be given this game by the club," he told ManUtd.com. "It will be a very emotional day for me, to play one last time at Old Trafford in front of our amazing fans.

"I am going to savour every moment and I hope the fans and Manchester United can also share in my special day.”

Sir Alex Ferguson gave his backing to the match, adding: “Ole is a loyal servant of Manchester United and I can not think of a more fitting tribute than the club to honour Ole in this way.

"It also gives the fans the opportunity to show their admiration and appreciation for such a well loved player. It will be a fantastic day for everyone."

“Ole is one of Manchester United’s true professionals," continued chief executive David Gill. "We look forward to hosting the first pre-season game at Old Trafford in honour of Ole’s illustrious career.”

U1st players made an excellent impression in round 9 of La Liga. It is worth mentioning Federico Fazio, José Ángel Crespo and Adriano Correia's performance in Sevilla's 3-0 victory over Valencia CF. It was young Crespo first La Liga game this season and he definitely made the most out of it.

Goalkeeper Notario and central defender Álvaro Mejía both impressed at Real Murcia's critical victory over Recreativo Huelva.

At San Mamés, Betis earned a draw against Athletic Bilbao with Juande Prados directing his team from a central midfield position.

Andrés Guardado was not good enough to take Deportivo to winning ways at the Bernabeu were they suffered a 3-1 defeat.

Great Crespo debut!

It was the first game that Crespo enjoyed with Sevilla's first team this season in La Liga and he definitely make the most out of it.

The Andalusian defender played very high standard football and did not leave Spanish international right winger Joaquín any chance in the attack. He did not get dribbled once and his marking and anticipation were superb.

It looks like young Crespo will become a regular Sevilla first team player under new manager Manolo Jiménez.
