Great Britain got their summer campaign off to a winning start with a 96-70 rout of Netherlands in Cobham (Surrey) on Sunday night. All 14 players on the roster saw at least 10 minutes of action as Finch looks to make further cuts to his team in the final weeks. Ryan Richards led the scoring with 16 points on 6/8 shooting in just 11 minutes. Devon Van Oostrum, You First client, had 8 points in his debut with the national team. Aron Roye led the Netherlands with 18 points on 6/8 shooting, whilst Arvin Slagter added 17 points and 5 assists.
The english head coach Chris Finch says Van Oostrum, who plays in Spain for Premier League club Caja Laboral, has progressed since last summer when he took part in a senior squad camp before the Euro qualifying matches.“His game is a lot more controlled now. He has a great feel for the game; is skilled, extremely quick and the position he plays is where we need a clever, quick, crafty point-guard.”
Finch hasn’t ruled out selecting Van Oostrum for his final squad for Lithuania. He said: “We’re not playing politics here. With all the young players we want them to compete. He’s definitely still in the mix.”
Van Oostrum is part of the Great Britain squad who will play Netherlands tomorrow and Nigeria on Tuesday in Cobham, Surrey.
