Carlos Delfino Helps Argentina Win FIBA Friendlies

Over the past weekend, Argentina’s men’s basketball team won a four-team contest designed as a warmup for the upcoming FIBA Americas. The squads — Cuba, Venezuela, Uruguay and the host, Argentina — met in Cordoba for the Super 4 Tourney.  In Argentina’s first game, the Bucks’ Carlos Delfino had 7 points in a 80-67 victory over Cuba. Teammate Manu Ginobili led the Argentine team with 25 points.

In the championship match against Venezuela, Argentina executed flawlessly in the first quarter and Delfino played a huge role. Carlos had nine points and a pair of steals early on to help Argentina build an astounding 35-8 lead after one quarter.  The Argentines thrashed Venezuela and won the title, doubling up their opponents by a 106-53 margin.  Delfino scored 15 points.  He was also credited with playing shutdown defense on Venezuelan star Greivis Vázquez (2 points).

Tuesday, the two teams met again in the CABB tourney (Confederación Argentina de Básquetbol). Argentina pulled out another victory, winning 90-73.  However, Delfino sat out the game (as well as the previous day’s practice) with a case of laryngitis.  The two teams will face each other next week as they make final preparations for the upcoming FIBA Americas — an event which also serves as an Olympic qualifier.
